SedoMLS gets another partner.

Sedo has signed up domain name registrar Dotster to participate in its SedoMLS network. The news comes just one day after the company announced a similar deal with Moniker.

SedoMLS is the companies distributed sales network that offers added exposure and “instant transfer” capability for domain name sales.

Dotster is the 18th largest domain name registrar with just over a million domains under management according to Webhosting.info.

Sedo already had a strong relationship with Dotster. In 2009 it purchased Dotster’s parking company RevenueDirect for $825,000. The acquisition included a continuing monetization agreement. Sedo also had a basic sales listing integration with Dotster back before SedoMLS was born.

In a long rumored transaction, Sedo has acquired domain name parking company ParkingPanel.com for an undisclosed price.

ParkingPanel was launched in 2006, but ran into a few roadblocks. In March of 2008 it lost its advertising feed and was forced to look for an alternate provider. It announced its relaunch in August of 2008. But, like many small domain name parking companies, it has faced a tough slough in today’s domain parking environment.

Sedo will incorporate the ParkingPanel.com brand into its own, and transition all of ParkingPanel’s customers over to Sedo. This transition should be completed before the end of the month.

Sedo acquired another small parking company, RevenueDirect, in February of 2009 for $825,000.

Domain name brokerage and parking company Sedo may be celebrating a milestone this quarter for reaching one million registered users.

The company’s first quarter financial report shows that the company now has 962,000 registered members, up from 907,000 at the end of last year. At this pace, Sedo should hit the million mark sometime during Q2 2009. It’s unclear if these numbers include new registrations that were part of Sedo’s acquisition of RevenueDirect.

Although registered users and domains keep increasing, the company continues to face pressure from changes in the domain parking business. Revenue for the first quarter came in at EUR 11.9M, down from EUR 12.3M in Q4 2008 and from 15.0M in Q1 2008. However, this small quarter-to-quarter decrease suggests that the bottom may be near.

Despite downturn, Sedo revenue drops only 12.6%.

[Editor: Earlier today I wrote about the acquisition price for RevenueDirect. Here is some more data about Sedo gleamed from its parent company annual report.]

Most people in the domain business would be happy to have their 2008 revenue be only 12.6% lower than 2007. Sedo has done just that.

According to its parent company AdLINK’s annual report, Sedo’s revenues fell from €62.6 in 2007 to €54.7 in 2008.

Revenue was negatively impacted by a drop in Google Adsense revenue from domain parking and wild swings in currency exchange rates, but the company managed to keep its domain sales business steady. The company also owns portfolios of domain names, but revenue and sales from that are not broken out. Sedo counts its commission from domain sales and its share of parking income as revenue.

I estimate the company’s revenue from brokered domain sales to be about $7.5M-$10M USD, or €5M-7M based on exchange rates on December 31, 2008.

While revenue numbers were down, other stats point up. The number of domains offered for sale grew from 10.5 million to 15.3 million, parked domains increased by 22% to 6.2 million, and the number of registered members grew from 647,000 to 907,000. The company had 179 employees as of the end of 2008.

Acquisition was small in monetary terms, but important in its signal.

According to public company financial reports, Sedo paid $825,000 for its acquisition of RevenueDirect in February. The purchase price included the customer base, RevenueDirect brand and all respective software.

The transaction price was not announced when the company was purchased in February, leading to speculation about the value of the deal. Many considered it small, and this is true from a dollar amount and perhaps the number of domains involved. But the deal was significant for a few reasons:

1. Sedo extended its relationship with Dotster, a registrar with over 1,000,000 domains under management.

2. It signifies future consolidation in the domain parking business, especially for smaller domain parking companies. (See Domain Name Industry Acquisition Watch).

3. It improves Sedo’s reach inside the United States, whereas the company is relatively stronger than its competitors outside the U.S.

Now that we know the sales price, we also have an idea of what comparable small domain parking companies might sell for. In this case it’s impossible to determine how much of the $825,000 purchase price was related to Dotster’s own domains and their monetization stream, client domains and their revenue stream, the technology, and the enhanced relationship with Dotster.

Toys, toys, toys. That’s a theme in the top stories on Domain Name Wire in February, as ranked by views.

1. Toys.com, Birthdays.com, Hobbies.com Sold at Auction – after getting a tip, Domain Name Wire uncovers the details behind a multi-million dollar domain name auction. If only the tip came in before the auction. In some ways it did, since Toys.com was reauctioned in the month.

2. GoDaddy.com Purchases Second Super Bowl Commercial – this article was actually published January 30, but got a life of its own the day after the Super Bowl as people looked for Super Bowl commercials. I think DNW beat all major news publications, including local Arizona press, to publishing this story.

3. Toys ‘R’ Us, Frank Schilling Among Bidders to Pay $1.35M or More for Toys.com – details of bidders for Toys.com Part II emerge, and there were some familiar faces.

4. Goldberger on Toys.com Team, eToys.com Buyer Remains Mystery – I started investigating the identities of two of the big winners in The Parent Company domain name auction. Although the eToys.com buyer remained a mystery, I had good reason to believe it was Toys ‘R’ Us.

5. Sedo Acquires RevenueDirect and Why It Makes Sense – some people were disappointed about the size of this acquisition (even though we don’t know how much it sold for), but the real story is that we’re entering another stage of acquisitions in the domain industry.

Sedo and Parked.com selected as top domain parking companies.

For the third year in a row, Sedo has topped Domain Name Wire’s survey for best domain name parking company. Here are the top 7 vote getters including percentage of the vote:

1. Sedo/SedoPro 33%
2. Parked.com 17%
3. NameDrive 11%
4. Fabulous 6%
5. GoDaddy 5%
6. Google Adsense for Domains 4%
7. DomainSponsor 4%

Compared to last year, Parked and NameDrive switched places, Fabulous jumped up a spot, and GoDaddy and Google made their entrance on the chart.

The rankings shake up a bit if you control for the number of people who have used each service. Is Sedo #1 just because more people are familiar with it than other services? To find out, I took the top 5 and calculated the percentage of votes as the top parking service divided by the percentage of respondents who said they had used that parking service:

1. Parked.com 58%
2. Sedo/SedoPro 51%
3. GoDaddy 40%
4. NameDrive 35%
5. Fabulous 34%

So the answer is no, it’s not just that Sedo is more well known. But it also shows that, controlling for how many people have used the service, Parked.com comes out on top.

Yesterday Sedo acquired RevenueDirect, a primarily U.S. domain parking company. The goal was to bolster its U.S. presence as Sedo is generally known as strong in Europe. As it turns out, Parked.com is voted the top domain parking company among U.S. respondents:

1. Parked.com 28%
2. Sedo 22%
3. Fabulous 8%
