Conference for the web hosting industry invades San Diego.

HostingCon kicked off yesterday in San Diego, bringing together the web hosting industry and its many related service providers.

I arrived late in the morning and caught the last ten minutes of a talk from OpenSRS’ Adam Eisner titled “What do New TLDs Mean for your Hosting Business”. Some members of the audience wondered if their clients would want them to acquire their brand names for all the new TLDs, how they’ll manage the many so many registry contracts, and if there were any “home run” TLDs they should consider offering to their clients. You can see the slides here.

A number of domain name companies are attending and or exhibiting at the conference: Moniker, Dot.tk, Neustar, OpenSRS/Tucows, VeriSign, eNom, NameMedia, Afilias, LogicBoxes, and ResellerClub. I’m here representing Skenzo. The exhibit hall is open Tuesday and Wednesday.

Highlights from my recent trip to Mumbai.

I spent last week in Mumbai at the Directi headquarters. It was great to sit down and work beside many of the people that I’ve only met over email and video conferences to date.

Experiencing Mumbai

I spent much of the time in the office and it was a fairly short trip. But I did get part of the “Mumbai experience”.

The first experience you have upon arriving in Mumbai is what locals call “driving”. I call it one big game of chicken. Seriously, driving in Mumbai makes New York City driving look like child’s play. The road is shared by cars, buses, trucks, autorickshaws, bicycles, people, handcarts, and occasional livestock. All with no lanes. And seemingly no rules. Red lights are merely a suggestion.

Yet through all the chaos traffic somehow works. I didn’t see a single accident while I was there.

The second experience is just living in such a mass of people. 20 million people are packed into the city. I rode past one of the main train stations at peak hour and thought our car was going to be lifted off the road by people. The trains are a site to see, too. There are no doors and people just hang out the side as it moves. I was dared to try to catch a ride on one. I declined.

The third experience is navigating the tourist shops. I walked into shops fully expecting to have to negotiate. But I wasn’t prepared for the intense cross selling. Seriously, these shop owners put the Go Daddy checkout process to shame. “You really should buy a rug to go with that Sari.” “Your wife would like this decorative elephant.”

Finally, I experienced real Indian food. Not Americanized Indian food. It puts local fare back home to shame.

Mumbai is unlike any city I’ve ever visited. A lot of it was good, like this view from my hotel on Juhu beach:

Oh yeah, and I think I’ve figured out the basic rules of cricket.

Inside the Directiplex

The Directiplex is a 1,500 seat building in the Andheri East area of Mumbai. It’s an impressive testament to Directi’s growth. The building houses all of the company’s businesses including ResellerClub, LogicBoxes, Skenzo, BigJumbo, and Media.net. (I primarily work with the latter three.)

It also houses the company’s new domain registrar BigRock. While I was in Mumbai, Directi co-founder Bhavin Turakhia showed off BigRock’s TV commercials to hundreds of employees. If you’re not from India you might not understand them, but judging from the crowd’s reaction they’ll make plenty of people laugh (and hopefully register domains).

Later this year the company will open up another building across town that can seat up to 800 people. Directi co-founder Divyank Turakhia gave me a sneak peak of the building, which has beautiful views across preserve land. When complete the building will include a bowling alley.

It’s all part of the company’s quest to attract good talent. The company has been successful so far, but there are still plenty of positions to fill.

HostingCon has opened registration for its 2011 event in San Diego, CA. The show will take place August 8 – 10, 2011 at the San Diego Convention Center.

I attended last year’s event in Austin. There were about 1,500 people in attendance, over 100 exhibitors, and a lot of domain name companies. Some of the domain companies that exhibited last year include:

Afilias
DotMobi
eNom
ResellerClub and Logic Boxes
VeriSign
Yexa / Dark Blue Sea
OpenSRS/Tucows

A number of domain name registrars integrate with web hosts, so it makes sense for them to meet their partners. Domain sales companies such as Afternic and Sedo were also there, as was Oversee.net.

The early bird rate is $279 for a full conference pass until the end of the year.

Web hosting conference kicks off in Austin, Texas.

The annual HostingCon conference kicked off in Austin this morning, with organizers expecting 1,500 or more attendees. I count over 115 vendors who will be showing their wares on Tuesday and Wednesday. A number of exhibitors are domain name companies who want to get hosting companies to sell their products including domain name registrations. Among the domain name companies are:

Afilias
DotMobi (which is running the official HostingCon mobile site at hostingcon.mobi)
eNom
ResellerClub and Logic Boxes
VeriSign
Yexa (new product from Dark Blue Sea)
OpenSRS/Tucows

Of course there are bunch more domain companies here that aren’t exhibiting, including DomainSponsor.

There are a number of parallels between a web hosting conference and a domain name conference. It’s primarily men and primarily tech geeks.

You can follow the conference at #hostingcon.

Domain name and web hosting reseller launches program to localize its control panels.

With all the talk of non-latin top level domain names hitting the web, ResellerClub’s latest news is very timely.

The company is rolling out Localization Partner Program, a way to use crowdsourcing to help translate its control panel into multiple languages.

English has been the primary language of the web, yet much of the growth is coming from people who do not use English as a primary language. We’re seeing that with IDNs, and ResellerClub’s new program is another example of catering to this growing population.

The program allows people to suggest translations and then the user base “votes in” the translations they’d like to see on their interfaces. It’s somewhat like a wiki for a control panel.

The company says it already has “100s of signups” after just a few days of the program. More information is available at resellerclub.com/localization.

7 more registrars added to domain name registrar review site.

Six more registrars are available for reviewing at Registrar Judge, Domain Name Wire’s sister site. Domainers can now review ResellerClub, Dynadot, Gandi.net, DomainDiscover, Joker.com, directNIC, and NameCheap.

The registrars were added at the request of Registrar Judge users. ResellerClub and Dynadot were added last week and since then ResellerClub has shot to the top of the charts.

At Registrar Judge, domain name owners can rate and review domain registrars based on price, security, customer service, and account management tools. These registrar aspects have been voted most important in Domain Name Wire’s annual surveys.

Nearly 100 ratings have been submitted since the site launched November 12. Based on the success of the site, Domain Name Wire will release Parking Judge in the near future. Parking Judge will let users review domain parking services.

Registrar Judge uses a Bayesian ranking system to chart the top registrars. The system takes into consideration all of the star ratings for the registrars (not just “overall”) in addition to the number of positive and negative reviews. The top three registrars are currently:

1. ResellerClub
2. Fabulous
3. GoDaddy

If you disagree with the current rankings, then submit a review.

Although ICANN has not announced it yet, it appears that domain registrar ResellerClub is taking over domains managed at domain registrar EstDomains, which is losing its accreditation.

ResellerClub has emailed customers of EstDomains to tell them that it will be taking over:

As you might be aware, EstDomains Inc will soon be de-accredited by ICANN and is awaiting its termination in lieu with the Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA). The termination will be effective from the 24th November, after which EstDomains will cease its Registrar operations and we, ResellerClub, will be taking over their existing Domain Names and SSL Certificate operations.

As I’ve mentioned before, ICANN probably struggled to find a company to take over the domain names even though it will boost some registrar by 270,000 domains. Many of the domains were used in spam and malware operations. But ResellerClub is part of Directi, which provided services to EstDomains.

EstDomains Inc was using LogicBoxes’ OrderBox Technology, which is also used by ResellerClub. This means that the transition will be fairly smooth, and you will also be able to manage your Reseller business from the same Control Panels.
