Over 100 million will watch GoDaddy Super Bowl commercials tonight.

The world’s largest registrar along with the .co top level domain will get a lot of attention today.

That’s because GoDaddy will air two Super Bowl ads today, including one about the .co domain name.

The first half commercial stars lingerie model Natalia Velez getting the body paint treatment from Jillian Michaels and Danica Patrick to promote .co. Velez was unveiled in person at DOMAINfest last week.

Many people wondered if .co got the “bang for its buck” that it expected after a similar GoDaddy commercial last year. I think we have our answer now.

The second half commercial features the Pussycat Dolls.

GoDaddy pre-released both commercials this year. It has pre-released ads in the past. This is a good strategy for the company, especially since it releases “continuations” of each commercial on Super Bowl Sunday. In other words, even if you see the commercials ahead of time you end up returning to view the continuation after the ad airs on TV. And the company doesn’t really care when you view its ads, as long as you end up on its site (and hopefully make a purchase).

Of course, pre-releasing also lets your competitors get some pre-game buzz, such as with this Name.com spoof featuring Denver running back Willis McGahee.

GoDaddy changes mind on SOPA.

[Update: Read my interview with Go Daddy CEO Warren Adelman about his company's changed stance on SOPA]

A growing call for a boycott of GoDaddy over its support of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) has achieved its goal — GoDaddy just announced it no longer supports the bill.

GoDaddy general counsel Christine Jones had been steadfast in her support of the bill, and GoDaddy had posted her commentary on the bill on its web site. That post has been removed.

Although the company came out in support of the bill a couple months ago, no one seemed to notice until a list of supporting organizations was released this week. That lead to a movement on Reddit for people to transfer their domains away.

Domain registrars such as Name.com and Hover offered coupon codes for transfers to people who wanted to join the movement. The movement echoed a similar outcry earlier this year after video surfaced of the company’s founder Bob Parsons shooting an elephant.

Wireless products company in China loses domain in suspicious circumstances; files UDRP to get it back.

Wireless company Shenzhen AEE Technology Co., Ltd has filed a UDRP for the domain name AEE.com.

But before you question this filing for a three letter domain name, there are some interesting circumstances surrounding this domain name. You can discover them with the help of DomainTools’ historical whois.

Shenzhen AEE Technology Co., Ltd owned the domain name until early July of this year. The domain name was registered at <del datetime="2011-11-08T19:59:41+00:00">Name.com</del> NameCheap.com and didn’t expire until 2015. Then on July 11 the domain was suddenly transferred to eNom and placed under whois proxy.

On October 21 the domain shifted to Dynadot. It was protected with a whois privacy service and showed Dennis Vink as the owner. The next day the named registrant using the privacy service changed to Alvaro Bernal.

[Update: I originally wrote that the domain was at Name.com. It was actually NameCheap, an eNom reseller. It then transferred to another eNom account (non-NameCheap) before being transferred to Dynadot.]

The web site now has new blog with the title: “AEE Alvaro’s Enchanting Experiences”.

Yep, this whole thing smells a bit fishy.

Do the 1% need their own top level domain name?

Just when you thought you’d seen it all…

A new offering from CentralNic called dotFamilyName proposes that the ultra rich should get their own top level domain name.

.Buffet, anyone?

The company pitches:

For as little as $500,000, prominent families will have access to the most prestigious and technologically advanced address located at the apex of the internet.

Hey, what else would you do with a spare half million dollars?

Although I think most of the value CentralNic will get out of this new offering is press, don’t be surprised if a couple people take them up on it — especially if they have a last name that could also be a brand.

I like the ring of .allemann, but I don’t fall into the ultra rich category.

Panelist finds it odd that Name.com makes domain registrant responsible for its own “coming soon” pages.

UDRP panelist Warwick A. Rothnie has called a clause in Name.com’s registration agreement related to parked pages an “extraordinary arrangement”.

The clause basically says that Name.com will put up ads on your recently registered domain name but that the registrant is responsible for making sure the ads don’t violate third party intellectual property rights.

In what might be thought an extraordinary arrangement, the clause purports to impose on the registrant an obligation to ensure that any such advertising does not violate any third party intellectual or other proprietary rights.

Although Rothnie finds this clause extraordinary, he says ultimately the agreement a domain registrant makes with its registrar is what it is:

Be that as it may, the appropriateness of that arrangement is a matter between the Registrar and the Respondent. It is plain, however, that the terms of the Domain Name Registration Agreement gave the Respondent power to choose whether or not to use the Registrar’s Parked Domain Service. Moreover, it is clear from the record in this case that the Respondent was able to ensure that advertising of the Complainant’s competitors ceased upon receipt of the Complainant’s demands.

In these circumstances, it is plain that the Respondent was in a position in which he could control whether or not “pay-per-click” link advertising appeared on the website to which the disputed domain name resolved and the content of that advertising. Accordingly, the Panel is not prepared to find that the Respondent has rebutted the prima facie case raised by the Complainant. The Panel therefore finds that the Complainant has established the second requirement under the Policy.

Most panelists don’t understand the difference between a domain registrar parked page and a parked page the registrant creates, and this is something that needs to be addressed. At least one UDRP panelist has used common sense when it comes to this distinction.

Fortunately, Rothnie did find in favor of the respondent in this case over IMD.<del datetime="2011-09-19T15:38:18+00:00">com</del>tv.

With the one year anniversary of the .co launch upon us, .Co has published details about expiring .co domain names and what happens to them:

1. When a domain expires, it will go into suspension status and registrars have 45 days to renew or delete the domain. Of course, some registrars will opt to auction off domains during this time if not renewed.

2. The registrar can delete the domain name any time during the 45 day suspension status period. That means a .co can drop from the registry anywhere between 20-65 days after the domain expires because…

3. When a domain is deleted, it will enter a Redemption Grace Period for 20 days. Domains can be renewed during the first 15 days of the RGP.

4. .Co’s Reservation system went live yesterday. It allows .co registrars to get on a waitlist for expiring .co domain names. It is currently offered by Name.com, Domain Monster, eNom, HEXONET, and Pool.

The year is 2036.

The media is buzzing as Apple’s latest CEO introduces the iPad 25. The wafer thin, flexible screen holographic device wows the crowd.

Somewhere, an interested consumer types iPad25.com into his browser bar. But Apple doesn’t own it. (Although it owns iPad25.apple).

I was looking for Ipad 2 information today only to find that, just like iPad.com, Apple doesn’t own iPad2.com. Many people have snapped up iPad#.com domain names. I looked up the status of Ipad2.com through iPad25.com before getting tired. All but two are registered (although many are expired and going through the deletion process).
