The deal was closed last week via Escrow.com.

Reink Media Group owns a handful of other investing sites including StockTradingToGo.com, tradeWISER.com, and TraderMike.net. But Stockbrokers.com is certainly a crown jewel for the company. In fact, much of tradeWISER.com has already moved to the new domain name.

Stockbrokers.com will be a comparison site for brokers. It includes reviews, trade cost comparisons, and a trade calculator.

According to DNSalePrice, StockBroker.org sold for $1,834 in 2006 and the plural version sold for $1,793.

Zuccarini responds to contempt charges, alleges contempt himself.

The ongoing battle of John Zuccarini and the assignee in Office Depot’s cybersquatting case is getting even more interesting.

To bring you up to speed:

-Zuccarini was found to have cybersquatted on Office Depot
-DS Holdings “bought” the judgment Office Depot won, so now it is owed the money (the IRS also has a tax lien)
-Zuccarini’s other domain names were to be used to satisfy the judgment in some way (monetization, auction, etc).
-A receiver was appointed in the case, and he let some of the domains expire, and they were then auctioned off at NameJet.
-Zuccarini sued NameJet and others over auctioning the domains
-DS Holdings and the receiver agreed they should auction the remaining domain names at TRAFFIC in October
-Zuccarini notified Latona’s and the TRAFFIC organizers that he would sue them if they auctioned the domain names.
-DS Holdings argued Zuccarini was in contempt of court for notifying the parties that they would be sued

Phew. Got that?

Now Zuccarini as responded (pdf) to the charges of contempt, and has himself levied charges of contempt against the receiver (Michael Blacksburg) and DS Holdings.

He also says DS Holdings is lying on a number of counts. For example, Zuccarini writes (he’s representing himself):

Then DSH, again tells an outright lie to the court, pg. 2@11-12: “Even Zuccarini has acknowledged that the proposed auction is a prominent and effective domain name auction.” To the contrary, Mr. Zuccarini has expressed that it would be the worst possible avenue to auction the domain names…

Defendant OBJECTS to the lie DSH has told and moves to have this whole pleading quashed and stricken from the record. DSH, ever since this matter was brought before this Court, has made libelous, slanderous, immaterial statements and this Court has stood idly by and allowed it. Now, DSH has resorted to outright lying.

Zuccarini also points out that he’s “clearly not in contempt of anything” since no court order has been directed to Zuccarini “about anything”.

Another wrench in the case: it turns out that the receiver is being represented by DS Holding’s attorneys in another case.

The Court should also be made aware, as it has recently come to my attention of the fact that the attorney’s for DSH, without regard to appearances or ethical standards as it relates to this case, currently represent the receiver Michael Blacksburg as a plaintiff, in ongoing litigation in the Northern District of California.

There is no doubt from the beginning of this action that the receiver Michael Blacksburg has been nothing but an advocate for DSH, from not notifying the Internal Revenue Service at the commencement of the case as he was legally bound to do, to not providing revenue reports as is required by law, until forced to by this Court’s order to do so. In these actions Blacksburg has ignored the duties of a receiver as required by the law to conduct himself as a neutral party in all matters of the case.

Zuccarini asks the court to remove Blacksburg as receiver.

Of course, the domain names are making money as they’re currently parked and apparently making close to $70,000 a year in revenue. Domain Name Wire has obtained a list of the domains at issue. Many of them are generic typos, such as horosope.com, astrolgy.com, and emplyment.com. Others are generics such as BadCreditLoans.com. A couple others might have trademark issues.

As of right now, it appears the majority of the domain names are parked with Dotzup.

One obvious question: why not just keep the domains parked rather than sell them at auction? The first $100,000 will apparently go to the IRS, and then the next tranche to DS Holdings, followed by the IRS again for another about $300,000. It would make sense to sell the domains only if it was for a high multiple that would satisfy the claims quickly.

Stay tuned.

Load times for parked domain names differ greatly.

Most visitors to parked domain names hit the back button on their browser rather than clicking on a link. One way to ensure that visitors click the back button more often is to have parked pages that load very slowly. How many times have you visited a web site and clicked back because it took forever to load?

I tested out the domain parking companies today to see how fast their parked pages load. I used a free tool at Pingdom to calculate load times for three different landing pages at 7 parking companies. I threw out the longest and shortest loading page for each service and have reported the middle one below.

Before viewing the load times, a caveat. Actually, many:

1. Some pages appear to have loaded to the end user even though additional items are still loading (such as stats trackers). So even if a page takes a few seconds to load, the end user may have seen it load in less than a second.

2. Network traffic and proximity to Pingdom’s test servers may matter. In other words, there are a lot of variables outside the parking company’s control.

3. Almost all of the companies loaded very quickly. Just because a parked page took longer to load than a competitor doesn’t mean it’s materially different.

4. Parking companies offer multiple landers, some of which load faster than others. I didn’t test all landers.

There are several ways companies can make their parked pages load faster. Good coding, compressed images, and proper CSS usage matter. Here are some other factors.

With that in mind (and I know people will bring up other fallacies in the testing methodology), here’s how the services performed:

Sedo – 1.1 seconds. Sedo has fairly straightforward designs that are light on graphics. They have lots of text with their one-click landers but the absence of large graphics keeps load time down.

Parked.com – 1.9 seconds. I assumed Parked would be slower given its large graphic on each landing page, but they’ve done a good job compressing the graphics.

DomainSponsor – 1.9 seconds. DomainSponsor’s landers are “googleesque” without pictures.

WhyPark – 1.9 seconds. WhyPark is coming out with a new version that should load even faster. But nothing to complain about here.

TrafficZ – 3.0 seconds. TrafficZ’s landers have multiple graphic files. One of the landers I ran had a file size of 136.4kb.

Dotzup – 3.0 seconds. Some of the landers are heavy on graphics.

EvoLanding – 5.8 seconds. This didn’t surprise me. EvoLanding’s pages take a long time to load, likely because the system auto-generates pages from multiple sources on the fly.

Probably not, but here’s a way to check.

You may have heard about recently discovered vulnerabilities in the DNS system that take advantage of recursive DNS to allow DNS cache poisoning. Spare the technical details: basically, if the nameserver your domain is hosted on is vulnerable, cybercriminals could redirect traffic meant for your site to a different web page.

Many domainers don’t own web sites, but they certainly have their domains parked on other people’s name servers. Are you vulnerable? Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has a new tool available to find out.

I tested the nameservers for many of the parking companies and found they are safe: Parked.com, Sedo, and Dotzup.

The test could not determine if my DomainSponsor parked domains were OK because of the way the nameservers are set up. However, my domains on the old TrafficClub nameserver (now part of DomainSponsor) tested fine.

TrafficZ’s main nameserver ns1.trafficz.com apparently has some vulnerability, but the tool says it’s low risk. I found a similar result with mini-site development companies Evolanding and WhyPark. (Update: WhyPark informs me that it has fixed the issue. Their nameservers are showing as ‘safe’ with IANA’s tool now. Update 2: TrafficZ has confirmed that is removed recursive lookups and had safeguards in effect to prevent exploitations.)

You should take these findings with a grain of salt. The IANA tool has a disclaimer “This tool has been implemented quickly to assist name server operators. It may have problems as it has not been thoroughly tested, so you should also perform your own tests and use this only as a guide.”

But if any of the technical teams from these parking companies wants to comment about what they have done since this vulnerability was exposed, please comment.

It’s almost time for the 3rd Annual Domain Name Wire Survey. This annual survey helps get a finger on the pulse of the domain community, covering important trends and predictions for the future.

Part of the survey includes selecting the best companies for particular services (e.g. registrar, parking). The number of domain service providers has exploded over the past couple years, and that’s where I need your help.
